Kelly Negvesky: Homeschool Mom, CollegePlus! Student

Kelly

From the same room where she teaches her three young children, wife and homeschool mom of three, Kelly Negvesky, began her journey to earn a bachelor’s degree. After reading Accelerated Distance Learning, Kelly called CollegePlus! “Do you take moms?” she asked. One week later Kelly was enrolled in CollegePlus!

Prior to enrolling in CollegePlus!, Kelly looked at college options for adult learners and discovered the tuition costs too high. “This was just not feasible for our family,” she said. “My first priority is to my family and I didn’t want to rob them of anything, so I prayed about it.”

Watch a fascinating video chronicle of Kelly’s story:

After speaking with a CollegePlus! degree advisor, Kelly recalls thinking, “I could really do this. So I sat down with my husband, showed him the time schedule and financial side of it. We both said we can do this in twelve months.”

Risking family relationships was not part of the equation. “When I started, my youngest was four and my oldest was eight. I wasn’t going to let completing my degree usurp my responsibilities to my family. My husband was very supportive and my parents were cheering me on!”

Kelly goes on to say, “With my husband, wow, it chokes me up to even think about it, he was my biggest cheerleader, he was willing to stand behind me and was so excited when I reached the goal.”

For Kelly, like many adult learners, becoming a CollegePlus! student was about more than just earning a diploma. “I had a clear goal for what I was doing. Six little eyes were watching me go through the process. To watch their mom go and learn something at the cost of sleep, it made a big impact on my children and in our classroom.”

Distance learning can have its challenges. “After the first five tests I failed two tests, it was a bitter pill to swallow.” But as Kelly reveals, CollegePlus! helps students succeed – “My CollegePlus! coach had a lot of experience in distance learning. Days that I was tired, my coach wasn’t, so it was a good energy exchange. The CollegePlus! mentoring and accountability program maintains character and that’s a missing link at the brick and mortar schools.”

We asked Kelly what she would say to an adult learner who may be unsure about getting their degree. “The first thing I’d say is, pray about it. If all the green lights are there, just go and do it. There isn’t one negative to the time I invested in this, it’s only been positive. I love CollegePlus!”

“My oldest daughter asked me what my plan for college is for the children. I have no desire for my children to set foot on a college campus. The whole plan starts with CollegePlus! Prep and then on to CollegePlus!”

Kelly has some great final insights on the rewards of earning her degree. “It turned into an exponentially large blessing. After earning my degree I was offered opportunities to write, which led to more opportunities to serve.”
