From a very young age Skylar McCune’s dad encouraged him to be a far-sighted thinker. “My dad always pushed me to make a difference. I want to be a part of the picture politically, to hold the line on Biblical values in our nation. I want to be in a position of influence motivating others to be involved.”
McCune found his vision for politics early on. “I attended a Christian school and friends often said I should run for President,” he said.
21-year-old McCune is an ambitious man. In his home state of Washington he currently works by appointment on the Land Use Advisory Commission and serves as Precinct Committee Officer.
Last year, McCune ran his father’s campaign for re-election as a state representative and he has his own eye on a state representative position for the 2010 election year. “If I win the seat in the 2010 election it will be the first father-son team to hold seats in the legislature,” he said. “I will also be the youngest in the legislature. That is exciting and motivates me to continue.”
McCune began his degree program with CollegePlus! in October 2007. He entered the program already equipped with a vision for where he wanted to be but he found Life Purpose Planning through CollegePlus! beneficial. “The planning got me focused on how I was going to reach my goals. It really made me stop and think about the steps I needed to take, get those down on paper, and look at what I might be missing,” he said.
With great aspirations, McCune knows a college degree is essential. “CollegePlus! has been a great thing! It [will] enable me to finish my degree in a fair amount of time thus allowing me to have that credibility and run for office at my young age.”
He is excited about completing his degree in December 2009 not only for the credibility it will grant him in his petition for public office, but also because he will be the first in his family to earn a bachelor’s degree in a very long time.
McCune is undaunted by the work ahead of him. However, he believes he'll accomplish very little if he doesn't keep a long term perspective on the future. “When I look at the preamble to the Constitution I am encouraged by the Founding Fathers when they say they are securing the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity,” he said.
He feels like he understands what the Framers of the Constitution realized: it wasn’t just for them but for everyone that came after them. “Right here in Washington certain groups are the majority and they have all they want. There are Christians in Washington state but getting them mobilized is difficult. They come out for one battle, where they win, and then they go home for the next four years.”
McCune is a man with a vision and it reaches far beyond today. He often looks to Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge,” in his aspirations to make a difference in his community. Through education and involvement, McCune plans to offer his life and his training as a communications major to God, waiting expectantly to see what He will do with it.

Although I live all the way in Kentucky, I have had the privilege of getting to know Skylar and his vision for politics. He and his father also introduced me to CollegePlus!. I thank God for the people and organizations He uses not only to further our own visions, but to simply provide encouragement through exemplary living. Keep pressing on, Skylar!
