What exactly are you paying for when you go to a name-brand college?
Dr. Martin Kennedy, an economist and professor from Tennessee, posed this question in a recent interview. He wants people to understand the dynamics between higher education and getting a job or starting a business in the emerging knowledge-based economy—the post Great Recession economy.
"All a college degree does is signal that they've accomplished something. It's hard for students to realize the benefit vs. the cost."
Dr. Kennedy flew to Texas to talk to the team at CollegePlus! about higher education.
When Dr. Kennedy was speaking directly to parents about the price they pay to put their child through college, he started bringing up hard questions. The kind of questions you usually don't hear from a college professor.
"What's a name-brand degree really worth? People think they are worth more than they really are."
We halted the filming to remind him that what he was saying could put his job at risk.
"You don't even need college professors to get degrees any more."
He kept talking and we kept filming.
Watch the interview.
As Dr. Kennedy asks in the video, what is a degree from a name-brand school actually worth? What does it do for you and those you serve? Leave us a comment and tell us what you think.
