During my senior year of high school, my family went through some difficult times as we dealt with a tumor in my Dad’s spinal cord. After his surgery, he went through radiation and therapy. As I began thinking about college, I knew that I wanted to stay home and help my family get back to normal. I felt stuck.
I had to be a full time college student for insurance purposes, but I didn’t want college to keep me from doing what I needed to. It was then that we came across CollegePlus! and I realized that furthering my education could be accomplished without taking over my life.
By studying on my own schedule, taking multiple tests at a time, and by planning my work load around what my family needed from me, I was able to do college within my life – not live my life around my college demands.

As I researched the impact that a college degree can have on a career, I came to the conclusion that a college education is extremely important, but it doesn’t outweigh everything else that employers are seeking.
I discovered that potential employers wanted someone with soft skills, experience in the field, and a love for learning. As I worked to complete my degree through CollegePlus! I had the flexibility needed to get a jump start on my resume, gaining experience by connecting with mentors in the field I was interested in, and working to improve those skills and character traits that employers find so valuable.
While applying for jobs, I realized that the path I selected to my BA was something my potential employers found interesting—and quite appealing. Completing my degree online demonstrated self-discipline, hard work, ingenuity, and creativity. It also conveyed a determination to succeed, a trait they wanted on their team.

When I started CollegePlus! I was tasked with filling out the Life Purpose Planning book. I have always been a planner and, to be honest, I didn’t think I needed this activity. I was wrong. That little book became one of the most important books I studied through my entire degree program.
Discovering, grasping, and writing down my life purpose helped me to prioritize my steps while pursuing my college diploma and has helped to shape what I have done since graduating. To keep the big picture in mind is one CollegePlus! lesson that I am still using on a daily basis.
