The Spanish Language CLEP tests students on four semesters worth of Spanish classes. There are approximately 120 multiple choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes.
This CLEP exam consists of three separately timed sections, two testing the student’s listening skills while the third tests reading proficiency.
There’s a huge payoff with this exam despite the hard work it takes to pass: you can earn up to 12 college credits by passing this exam. In case you were wondering, 12 credits equals 10% of a typical bachelor’s degree. This is probably why the Spanish Language exam is the most popular CLEP among test takers.
The CLEP Spanish Language exam challenges a student’s understanding of the following skills:
Having two years of high school Spanish, especially if a college-level textbook has been used, is often sufficient to do fairly well on the exam. However, students at that level will usually earn six credits instead of 12 since it’s difficult to achieve the required score for maxing out the credits.
If a student has studied two years in high school and has also spent time speaking Spanish in a native setting (like Mexico, South America, or Spain), their ability to earn the full 12 credits is much more likely.
For example, I scored a 78 on the Spanish Language CLEP after having studied four years in high school and living in Spanish-speaking countries for almost eight months. A friend who studied in college and spent some time outside the US almost earned 12 credits on the exam but was limited to six credits by his score.
This is definitely not a CLEP that can be accelerated like humanities or social science and history. It either requires extensive immersion in a Spanish speaking culture and/or at least four semesters of college-level coursework in the language.
