Overview of major: A Music degree provides a great foundation of college learning coupled with an in-depth look into both the history of music as well as practical music theory. Because there is such a variety of careers that can spring from a music degree, students are provided great flexibility in finding courses that interest them and are relevant to their goals. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 50% of musicians work for themselves. Other careers, such as educators, directors, etc work for organizations for a certain pay and include approximately 240,000 jobs in 2008. The Bureau of Labor Statistics mentions that in May of 2008, these workers had an average hourly wage of $28.28.
