Landing an internship that is specific to your major will increase your chances of getting the job you want after college graduation. Not only will you have book knowledge of your field of study but you will have hands-on experience that will give you a competitive edge. In addition, internships offer the opportunity for the development of leadership skills such as critical thinking, effective communication, time management, and discipline. Another important part of internships are letters of recommendation.

When applying for internships, it’s important to realize that not all internships are created equal. Some organizations pay interns hourly, some with stipends, and others not at all. Some internships offer the academic credits as a reward for interns. It’s important to check with your academic institution to make sure your internship is tailored for college credit.

Here are 8 great places to start your internship hunt:

InternshipIn – started by college students for college students, this is one of the leading internship sites on the internet. INC Magazine recently named it as one of the “Coolest College Startups.”
OM – want to get college credit while on a missions trip? With branches in over 40 countries, OM will help you serve God and earn college credit. They will tailor an internship to fit your interests, major, and college requirements.
MonsterCollege – The younger sibling of Monster.com, this site was built with college students in mind. Their blog breaks down the hiring process and will help you learn what to look for in a job or internship. They boast the “World’s largest entry-level job board.”
Idealist.org – Want to work for a non-profit? Idealist is the website for you. They currently have over 2,000 internships available across the world. Idealist allows you to search internships by area of focus, country, language, skills needed, compensation, and available dates.
Experience.com – This fun site is great for students who want to learn more about internships; how they work, what kind of industries are offering them, and how to land one. Video interviews with industry leaders allows students to see where internships can take them.
Students.gov – While this isn’t the prettiest site out there, it provides links to 64 Government agencies looking for interns. From the FBI to the US Dept. of Commerce, there are plenty of internships available for students in DC.
Go Abroad – This is the site for international internships. With newsletters, scholarships, language study programs, and a comprehensive list of volunteer opportunities and internships, GoAbroad.com is a valuable resource for students.
