What can you do with a walk-in closet, a stack of books, and a computer? If you're Sal Khan, you can become one of the most respected tutors and leaders in distance learning in the world.
Khan, who received his MBA from Harvard, is a former Hedge Fund Manager. He started producing tutorials to help educate the world around him. On any given day, his distance learning videos have an average of 70,000 views. Bill Gates is one of his most vocal supporters. Gates watches the videos with his 11-year old son, Rory.
"I teach the way that I wish I was taught. The lectures are coming from me, an actual human being who is fascinated by the world around him. The concepts are conveyed as they are understood by me, not as they are written in a textbook developed by an educational bureaucracy. Viewers know that it is the labor of love of one somewhat quirky and determined man who has a passion for learning and teaching. I don't think any corporate or governmental effort--regardless of how much money is thrown at the problem--can reproduce this," says Khan on his website.
Khan's video collection - there are over 1,400 videos! - cover a range of topics including Chemistry, Math, Physics, History, and of course, Economics. He doesn't have any plans of stopping his distance learning videos.
Caitlin wishes she had Sal Khan as a tutor during college. She probably would have become a doctor or a nuclear physicist from the knowledge gained. Caitlin has her BA in Journalism.
