The CLEP College Mathematics exam is worth 6 college credits, and consists of approximately 80 multiple choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. It covers graphing, logic, statistics and other pre-algebra mathematical concepts.
The most relieving information for a majority of students is that this exam does not cover advanced mathematics. About half of the questions ask usual straightforward problems, where the other half requires applying an understanding of concepts into solving a little more complex problems. You will want to master and know the real number system, logic, sets, equations, functions and their graphs, probability, statistics, and data analyses. You will also be required to know and understand mathematical vocabulary, symbols and notations. Don’t skip learning these terms for they will help with narrowing down what is being asked in a problem.
Functions, probability and statistics are of key importance. This is what you should spend a majority of your study time learning (especially if you are weak in these areas). If you study these types of problems consistently and steadily, you will have a solid grip on the College Mathematics exam.
• Review for the CLEP General Mathematics Examination (Comex) by O’Donnell and Floyd
-Contains good practice tests, covers a broad subject matter, practice problems are easier than the real test, contains full-length practice tests, use as a supplement to additional materials.
• Barron's 5 Basics by Doster, Schmid, Ward and Poitras
-Contains 3 full-length practice tests with detailed question reviews for College Mathematics, questions are harder than the actual CLEP, but wonderful to help prepare.
• Princeton Review Cracking the CLEP by Peterson's
-Overview of Mathematics, good tips on how to take the test and what specifically is covered, has great practice tests to help gage what concepts need more study.
• Mathematics Made Simple, 6th Edition by Cusick
-A self-teaching text, a review of basic math skills, gives practice questions with step-by-step solutions, helpful glossary of terms (does include some advanced algebra, geometry and trigonometry which will not be needed for the test).
