Choosing Your Major
CollegePlus! takes a decidedly different approach to education and degrees than our traditional counterparts. CollegePlus! is less focused on pursuing a degree in order to “function within society” or “pursue a job/vocation,” and more focused on helping students understand their purpose in life and which degree would best equip them with the training and knowledge to best fulfill that purpose.
Why Do We Have a Unique Vision?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average person will hold 10.5 jobs during the ages of 18 and 40. Other statistics suggest that 80% of those who major in a given field end up employed doing something totally different from what they majored in. CollegePlus! seeks to assist students as they choose their degrees, offering suggestions and recommendations aimed at reversing this trend. By helping students discover the degrees that best match their gifts and talents, CollegePlus! prepares students for jobs they can excel at and enjoy throughout their lives.
Our Philosophy for Majors
The prevailing philosophy amongst career counselors and college faculty has been to encourage students to specialize in specific degrees. However, this philosophy is changing due to the fluctuating business environment. As a result, CollegePlus! recommends broad, well-rounded degrees where the student keeps his or her options open for the future. If, after completing Life Purpose Planning, the student still does not know which major to choose, CollegePlus! defaults to two of the most well-rounded and universally-accepted degrees in the marketplace: Business and Communications. Every individual needs to communicate well and can be benefited by some understanding of business processes. Students can always specialize at the graduate level, but by choosing a broad undergraduate, they keep their options open and avoid limiting themselves later because of their initial degree choice. This philosophy is especially recommended for younger high-school aged students.
